Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of glands in the male chest. This is most commonly seen after puberty and continues in adult life. It is caused due to hormonal imbalance during puberty which stops after sometime. Gynaecomastia has two components – a glandular component and a fatty component. It can be classified according to its gland and skin excess into Simon’s grades.
Gynaecomastia impacts our lives in many ways. The young guy doesn’t want to go to the gym or the swimming pool or take a beach vacation. He avoids taking off his shirt, tshirt and that makes him very conscious of his body all the time. This has a psychological impact on his mind and often he suffers from anxiety leading to loss of concentration in studies and other activities.
No amount of exercises, diet or any form of medication can get rid of gynecomastia entirely as the fatty component is modifiable but the glandular component is not. The glandular component continues to stay and cause contour abnormality unless it is taken out and removed by surgery.

Few routine investigations are required for general anaesthesia checkup and clearance.
