There are plenty of therapies in hairfall but hair transplant is the only one that brings new hair to the scalp. All others are directed at slowing the rate of hairfall and to nourish the existing hair follicles.

Mechanism of hairloss

Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and DHT attaches to the androgen receptor in the hair of anterior scalp and vertex and causes hairloss.

A thorough evaluation of the cause of hairloss is essential particularly in females as there may be several inciting factors of hairfall. A visit to the plastic surgeon and few investigations may be required for the same

Medical management

Medical treatment consists of vitamins and micronutrient deficiency correction, attempt to reduce formation of DHT and topical application of minoxidil

Surgery

Hair transplant is a day care surgery under local anaesthesia. It may be done by two ways. The FUT technique harvests a strip of skin and takes the hair follicles from there. The FUE uses a punch to extract the hair follicles diffusely with almost no scarring

Post op care

A loose surgical cap is worn for 7 days. Care should be taken while lying down. Smoking and alcohol is prohibited

Adjunct therapies

Non surgical therapies like PRP (platelet like plasma), SVF (stromal vascular fraction) or exosomes may be done. These therapies extract growth factors from the blood or fat and are injected in the hair bearing scalp to reduce existing hair fall

Beard and eyebrow transplantation

Beard and eyebrow transplantation may be done according to the needs and requirement of the client using similar principles
